Why I Love Being a Middle-Aged Woman!

$

0

The dreaded midlife crisis …. we’ve all heard it about it. And getting older has its challenges for sure.  But I have to say that for me, midlife has been way more fun than I ever expected. Here’s some reasons why I actually LOVE being a middle-aged woman!

happiness in midlife

SELF-CARE IN MIDLIFE

It seems to be that this time in our life is the perfect time to start focusing on taking great care of ourselves. Actually, anytime is a great time for that, but many of us felt spread thin in our younger days: learning how to do a healthy relationship, caring for young children, proving ourselves in our career, and taking care of aging parents. You still may be faced with some of these tasks, but as we age, I feel like our life opens up a bit and we have more time for self-reflection and self-care.

My story here is a bit different than most. I choose not to have children, so my care-taking was for elderly parents.  (And believe me if I had a choice, I’d give anything to still be taking care of them.)

self care in midlife

MIDLIFE CONFIDENCE SURGE

I hear about this newfound confidence from many of my midlife sisters. We know ourselves better. I know that I reach out for adventures that might have intimidated me when I was younger. Blogging is one of those adventures for sure!  I’m not sure if I could’ve had the guts to put myself out there in my 20’s.  There’s something to be said for being just being comfortable being you and caring less what people think.

midlife confidence surge

FINANCIAL SECURITY

Hopefully the days of living month-to-month are long behind us. We can enjoy spending a little money on fun things like vacations and duh …. clothes!

financial security in midlife

LOOKS IN MIDLIFE

Now, stop laughing. There ARE good things about our looks as we age.  Breakouts are mostly a thing of the past, right?  We don’t have to wash our hair as often. And best of all, no one expects us to look good in a bikini anymore.  Hey if you do, great, but no one expects it. Hallelujah, pass me a cookie and a cute cover up!

looking good in midlife

MENOPAUSE

Along with all the hot flashes and weird hormonal mood swings, there are some things to be celebrated: no more periods, no more PMS, no more pregnancy scares! And my favorite: you can use “menopause brain” as an excuse for just about anything. (It really is a thing, google it!)

LOOKING AHEAD

And hey there’s still so much to look forward to!  At 50 years old, I had a life long dream come true: I attended New York Fashion Week! Who knows what 51 will bring?

making dreams come true in midlife

And down the road a bit I see more blessings waiting for us, like senior discounts and retirement!

looking forward to retirement

And did you know that there’s research that shows that from our 50’s on we actually get happier?!!

So what do you like about being your age, Dolls, whatever that age may be?!

J.Jill does it again with easy to wear, high-quality, flattering options for summer!

J.Jill summer outfit, Style over 40

Top – Tie-Front Top c/o J.Jill / Skirt – Easy Printed Maxi c/o J.Jill

Tie-Front Top

Looking to hide a little tummy?  This cute top with the tie detail in front could be just the ticket!  The sleeve length is so flattering too. The lightweight cotton and modal is perfect for hot summer days. Also available in a beautiful blue shade.  Size recommendations: I’m wearing a small and usually a size 4 on top.  It’s roomy and I could’ve gone with an XS.

Easy Print Maxi Skirt

Loving this batik-inspired diamond print in all these luscious colors!  The skirt is so soft and comfortable and easy to wear.  This is the misses size small and the length is perfect for me at 5’7″ but the skirt is available in petite, women’s, and tall sizes too! I’m usually a size 6 on the bottom and the small fits nicely with no clinging.

J. Jill sent me these pieces to try and review. All words and opinions are all my own as always.

How was your Memorial Day weekend, Ladies? This teacher is feeling VERY cheerful about her summer off! Did you shop any sales?  I decided on this Steve Madden tote on sale for the Nordstrom’s Half Yearly Sale (going on until June 4th!).  I had the hardest time picking one, which isn’t really like me. I blame it on all the super cute styles out right now!

Memorial Day weekend means the start of summer to most of us …. so bring on the summer fun!!!

Fun Floral Crops & Link Up!

Nothing says hello summer like some fun floral cropped pants!

THE PIECES

I’m wearing J.Jill’s Soft Rayon-Twill Wide Leg Cropped Pants in the Deep Blue Lush Garden print. Isn’t it a pretty print for summertime?  Also be sure to check out the cool Deep Blue Island Foulard, as well as great basic colors like white, black, and navy. I’m wearing a size small and I think even an XS would’ve worked, though I prefer my summer clothing to be flowing and loose if possible!

I paired the pants with the J. Jill Lace Appliqué Linen Sweater that you might remember from this post. I love a lightweight summer sweater!

HOW CAN I WEAR THEM?

Look for these pants to show up again soon on the blog and/or my Instagram account with a cute tee. Right now the mornings have been overcast and a little sweater was the perfect partner.  Along with casual looks, you could also wear these pants with a blouse and even a blazer for a work look, a cute off-the-shoulder top for a date night, or a tank and flip flops for the beach. I love versatile pieces!

Since I’m really feeling this floral pants trend, I had to choose Katie of Hello Katie Girl as the fav of the week.  Look at those pants!!  Go, Katie, Go!

My first week of summer vacation has been amazing!  I feel so relaxed!  I’ve had fun catching up on my girl time with a dog walk with my friend Sherry and her little cutie pie, PNut and today I’m heading out for a fun Santana Row lunch with Cathy of Bay Area Fashionista! I’ve also indulged my David Lynch obsession with  all four parts of the new Twin Peaks! Anyone else watching?  (It’s full of Lynchian weirdness and symbolism and not for everyone.)

Tie-Dye Maxi Dress with Pockets!

Summer time dressing … easy breezy, cool and relaxed.  But it can be a challenge too. We want to look pulled together and most of us don’t want to show as much skin as we used to. A comfy maxi dress is one fab choice!

tie-dye maxi dress, style over 40

The Dress

I’m just loving this flowing cool tie-dye maxi dress from Shein.  As always, at Shein, it’s a bargain!   And comes in four other tie-dye shades as well.   I’m wearing the medium which fits just the way I wanted it to, loose and comfy.  And I’m always thrilled to have pockets!

How Can I Wear It?

I wore the dress here to run around town, but I also think it would be the perfect vacation dress! Cute for souvenir shopping, lunch by the beach, and even as a swim suit cover up, right? The length was perfect for me with my wedge sandals (I’m 5’7″). With flip flops, I would probably tie the hem in a cute little knot.

I wore this classic blue and white stripe linen tunic out to lunch with the fabulous Cathy of Bay Area Fashionista.

J. Jill's linen tunic for summer 2017

Girl Lunch

I adore my girl time, but during the school year it can be so hard to schedule.  Now being on summer break, I can work around my friends’ schedules and finally do some catching up!

I had a wonderful lunch at Pizza Antica at Santana Row with Cathy. She’s become such a good friend and a constant style and blogging inspiration!  You need to check out the cute outfit she wore.

My Look

I styled my new J. Jill linen tunic with white jeans and wedge sandals.  I love the length of the tunic. I totally admit to being more comfortable in white jeans when my butt is covered up!  This outfit felt very classic and summer fresh. My white Rebecca Minkoff tote, Topshop sunnies, Kendra Scott earrings, and Daniel Wellington watch have been on repeat over and over again this season.

Muted Red Deconstructed Sweatshirt!

Yes, even when walking the dogs, we want to look good, right Dolls?  How cute is this deconstructed raw uneven hem sweatshirt in muted red?

California casual over 40

The Sweatshirt

A lightweight hoodie is a summer must.  This one with the raw uneven hem looks fresh and on trend, and I’m loving the muted red. The color is perfect for pairing with summer’s favorite combo: red, white, and blue.  I know it will come with me to watch fireworks on the 4th of July this year!  And of course it’s always perfect for cool mornings, running errands, walking dogs, or even going to the gym.

Other Summer Basics

These Old Navy kick flare jeans have been my go-to pair for awhile now. I actually have 3 pairs of them since I wear them so often! Of course a gal also needs comfy sneakers, great sunnies, and fun earrings too!

The Models

My two rascals are Rox the husky and Lucky the mystery mutt. They’re both rescue pets and they own my heart … and my husband’s too.  Don’t they look happy to be in the photos?! They are always spoiled, but even more so in the summer when they get so much time with me.  We all go through separation anxiety when school starts again.

Happy almost weekend, Everyone! I thought I would style my new denim wide-leg crops with an off-the-shoulder blouse for a date night look!

Madewell denim culottes, off the shoulder top, style over 40

The Jeans

Although probably not the most flattering jeans in my wardrobe arsenal, I am loving this trendy silhouette. These Madewell jeans have wide legs, raw hems, and a cropped length. I’ve worn them in a more casual look, and now for a date night look, and I expect to wear them soon with sneakers too!

The Top

This off-the-shoulder top from Chicwish was one of my purchases for our trip to Puerto Vallarta in February.  I love it with the flowing white maxi for a beachside dinner and I’m also loving it with these cool jeans for a date night in the city look.

Karina’s Katharine Dress in C’est Bon!

Love polka dots? Love florals?  How about both in one adorable print?  Loving this new print from Karina Dresses, C’est Bon!  (And indeed it is!)

Karina Dresses Katharine in C'est Bon, Flower Flour in Willow Glen

The Katharine

This is a new Karina dress style for me.  It’s a classic style with a crew neck, cap sleeves, and a sash tie, and a knee-length.  Like every Karina Dress it’s easy to wear and flattering, along with being wrinkle-free, machine washable, and made in the US!

C’est Bon

If I remember my high school French, I believe “C’est Bon” means “It’s Good!” The print is cute little white dots on a black background with pretty muted blue and green florals that have a bit of an Art Deco vibe.  This very cool print is available in other styles as well.

How Can I Wear It?

I wore the dress with a blazer and pumps for a more classic and professional look, but then couldn’t help adding the fun Bauble Bar earrings as well. On a warmer day, the dress would look great with strappy sandals.  And of course it would be cute with a denim jacket and booties for a fun casual look.

Where Did I Go?

I went through downtown Willow Glen to the European bakery and florist down the street, Flower Flour.  It’s the cutest little place with the best pastries and the nicest staff. If you’re in the Bay Area, you need to stop in!  And when you do, let me know and I’ll meet you there. I’m somewhat addicted to their persimmons cookies!

I had fun taking these pictures at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Peace Garden in San Jose. Candy Pink Stripes and Pom Poms (& Link Up)!

$

I had to get on the pink, off-the-shoulder, and pom pom bandwagon! I feel so cute and feminine in this look!

The Top

The top is a new purchase from Nordstrom.  Isn’t it cute?  Even though it looks just pink in many of the photos, it’s actually a cotton candy pink with crisp white stripes. It also comes in blue stripes and a black and white gingham. I kinda want them all!  It’s just the right length and the elastic on the shoulders is comfortable and secure.

Everything Else

I added my fav Old Navy kick flares, my cerise pink Coach bag, and my fun Donald J. Pliner fairy slides. I topped the outfit off with my Topshop sunnies and my Kendra Scott earrings. Speaking of Kendra Scott, I’m going to their anniversary party on Saturday with Cathy of Bay Area Fashionista and can’t wait to see their latest selections!

Shein Off-the-Shoulder Tassel Maxi Dress!

The weather has been so hot in San Jose this weekend that it was the perfect excuse to wear this fun summery off-the-shoulder dress!

off the shoulder maxi dress with tassels

The Dress

Lightweight and easy to wear, this dress combines several fun trends: aztec print, an off-the-shoulder ruffle top, and bright tassel details! Don’t you love maxi dresses and skirts in the summer?  They’re cool, breezy, and flattering. Maxis are my number one summer wardrobe staple!  On my figure a maxi is way more flattering than a pair of shorts … and I can’t be all alone here, right?

Where did I wear it?

I wore this dress to Santana Row, a fun upscale place to shop and eat in San Jose. I was meeting Cathy of Bay Area Fashionista for the Kendra Scott store’s one year anniversary party!  It was very fun and maybe you followed along on my Instagram stories?  I’ll do a separate post soon on all the fun we had and all the fabulous pieces I brought home with me!  I got tons of compliments on my dress from every age group, which is always fun!

Kendra Scott for Summer 2017

I was lucky enough to get invited to the Kendra Scott party at their store at Santana Row in San Jose. They were celebrating one year at this location, along with Kendra Scott’s new summer pieces!

Kendra Scott party Santana Row

The Party

The Kendra Scott store was turned into a fun party atmosphere with snacks, drinks, a DJ playing dance music, a photographer taking pics, and even a little area where you could grab props and take polaroids! We got special presents and they had a gift with purchase. My local blogging buddy, Cathy (Bay Area Fashionista), was there for the fun. And a portion of all the sales went to a great cause, the Junior League of San Jose!

The Summer Collection

It’s no secret that I’m a big Kendra Scott fan and I was loving the summer vibe. The summer collection has lots of gorgeous opal pieces, and lots of delicate necklaces that would look perfect layered, along with stackable rings and bracelets. I could’ve left with half the store, and well, I kinda did!

Gingham Skirt & Link Up Birthday Party! 🎈

That’s right, today is my birthday!  So of course I needed a fun summer look!

Gingham Skirt

I’ve been wanting a black and white gingham midi skirt and Shein was nice enough to send me one.  When I first tried this on, I wasn’t too sure about the pleated silhouette.  I like A-line, but maybe this was too poof-y? But with the right shirt, I think it really works. Plus it makes you want to swish and twirl when you walk.  And there’s even pockets! The Hidden Pocket Detail Pleated Checkered Skirt also comes in blue!

The Other Pieces

I paired the skirt with a sleeveless denim shirt tied at the waist. I also added my red patent leather pumps and shiny red lips and nails to match. If you’re a regular reader, you know how much I love a pop of red!  Then for extra interest, I added my vintage floral handbag.  Isn’t this a sweet little bag?  I found it at an antique flea market a couple of years ago and I don’t use it often, but when I do it always makes me smile. The sunglasses are Desert Rose by Winkwood (use code FASHIONSHOULDBEFUN for %30 off).

Pom-poms, Bell Sleeves, OTS Top!

I’m over the moon about this cute new top from Shein! It has all my favorites summer trends in one … pom-poms, bell sleeves,  and off-the-shoulder!

The Top

This top ended up being the perfect birthday blouse for a day in Santa Cruz!  The colorful pom-poms, bell sleeves and off-the-shoulder details made it such a fun, trendy look.  And to make it even more perfect, this blousy tunic gave me lots of room for indulgent birthday eating! The blouse also has a couple of nice extra features, including a lining in front for modesty, as well as the option to wear it on the shoulders as well.  A very cute, versatile top for summer fun!

The Accessories

I added some beachy accessories, like my favorite summer tote, gladiator sandals, and mirror sunnies.  I’m also wearing several of my dreamy new Kendra Scott pieces: the Lacy earrings, Jayde necklace, and Elton bracelet. And my Old Navy Kick Flares which are my fav go-with-everything summer jeans.

My Birthday

I spent a wonderful day with my husband, Shannon, at the beach. We had a beautiful breakfast with a view!  The sun came out soon after this, but that early morning fog the perfect lighting for some photos.

Best Dresses for Over 40 Women

A sweet summer dress … there’s nothing better. I love wearing a pretty dress in the summertime, don’t you? But sometimes over 40 it’s harder to find the perfect one that will give you coverage where you want it.

best summer dresses women over 40

And of course everyone has different parts they would like to cover too, right?  Some over 40 babes want to hide their legs, some their arms, some have a tummy to work around, etc.  I’ve searched through many shopping sites to bring you what I think are all good midlife dress options.

Best Over 40 Summer Dresses

Of course not every dress will work on every midlife beauty, but I bet you can find one or two or ten that would work on you, right?  Which is your favorite? And which would you never wear and why?

Rainbow Stripes & Link Up!

When you look at this outfit, what comes to mind?  I think of a circus ballerina. I don’t think there is such a thing, but if there was, I would totally want to be one!

(Pssst …. hey … wanna to be in the know for all the July 4th sales?!  Be sure to sign up for my weekly newsletter!  Every Friday I send out a list of sale dates and codes, and this weekend the sales should be MAJOR!)

The Skirt

How bright and fun is this rainbow striped skirt?  I love something with a lot of color that I can play with.   I can also wear it with black, white, orange, red, blue, teal, and hot pink! It’s a satiny material that feels really nice and oh so, girly.

The Top

The top is a ribbed summery sweater with a trendy criss cross detail in front.  I love this blush pink, though to be honest it’s hard for me to wear close to my face.  But as long as I make myself up, it’s do-able.  And again, oh so girly!

The Accessories

Of course I needed to add my red patent leather pumps. They just seemed so perfect with this!  Also my white Rebecca Minkoff bag, Topshop sunnies, and Kendra Scott earrings.

OUTFIT DETAILS & SHOPPING LINKS

Sticking with the striped theme, I chose Andrea of Andrea’s Wellness Notes to feature this week.  Loving the stripe mixing perfection!

Ready for the July 4th weekend, Dolls? Any fun plans?  Do you have your outfit prepped? And hey, you don’t need to be an American to celebrate … who doesn’t want to wear red, white, & blue and eat too much and watch fireworks?!

Chic Cover Ups for Women Over 40

I was browsing online recently for a cute swimsuit cover up, a beach season essential, right?

When I searched for cover ups, I got a lot of options like this:

Seriously?!  Now what exactly is being covered up?! I was cracking up!  Whatever these items are, cover ups they are not!

I thought it might be helpful to put together a few fab choices for women who might really want to actually cover up something to for their trip to the beach snack shack!

Here are a few of my favorites:

And in case you missed it, here’s the post about my poolside look on vacation in the spring.

Is everyone having a fun start to their July?  If you follow me on FB and IG, you might know that I’ve had an eventful couple of days, and not in a good way. First I got locked out of my house taking my trash out … in my PJs!  Embarrassing! But even worse, the next day I tripped over my dog and gashed my forehead.  Hubby rushed me to the ER and luckily my CT scan came out fine.  Still I have to deal with a terrible headache and five stitches on my forehead! (Still haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to work around that taking photos this week!) So, please tell me about your fun and relaxing weekend, so I can enjoy vicariously!  Hee!  What have you been up to, Dolls?

And tell me, what type of cover up do you like to wear at the beach?

Happy July 4th, Everyone!

July 4th style over 40

Fun on the 4th!

Is everyone having a nice July 4th celebration? I know I have readers from other countries, and we welcome you to celebrate too!  I’m happy that I feel good enough now after my accident (fell and gashed my head) to wear something cute and have some fun! With the right angle and/or sunnies held just right, you can’t even see my stitches in these photos … yay!

Red & White Lace Off-the-Shoulder Peasant Blouse!

I’ve been saving this Multiway Crochet Neck blouse for July 4th, though I know I’ll be wearing it again and again too this summer.  Loving the pretty red embroidery with the crochet lace shoulder details. It can be worn on or off the shoulders. Isn’t it so pretty?  Runs large so size down!

Other Details

I had to add some blue to my look so I went with blue jeans and blue nails too.  Also I’m wearing my fabulous Winkwood sunnies which are on major sale (plus you can get 30% off with the code FASHIONSHOULDBEFUN)! They’re cool, lightweight, and have excellent UV protection. And I’m even happier than usual wearing my Bauble Bar Piñata Drop Earrings now that I’ve started wearing Kendra Scott’s Lobe Wonders on my ears.  Have you tried them?  If you have problems with heavier earrings and/or stretched out earring holes, they are a must have!
